Primary school teachers in the FCT may soon call off their three-month strike following a key intervention by Minister Nyesom Wike.

At a closed-door meeting on Thursday, Wike directed that six months of the area councils’ 10% Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) be withheld to pay 70% of the teachers’ salary arrears. A special committee has also been set up to address remaining issues within two weeks.

Area council chairmen agreed to the move, despite the financial impact, urging the teachers to return to the classroom. NUT leadership welcomed the resolution but said a final decision would come after consulting its executive council.
