UniAbuja VC Crisis: Concerned Staff Petition Against Removal of Prof. Aisha Abuja, Nigeria
The crisis surrounding the leadership of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has deepened as concerned staff members have petitioned against the alleged removal of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aisha Mohammed.
The petition, signed by a coalition of academic and non-academic staff, was submitted to the university’s governing council, urging a reconsideration of any plans to remove Prof. Aisha from office.
The staff members argue that her leadership has brought significant improvements to the institution, including infrastructural development, academic excellence, and improved welfare for both staff and students.
According to sources within the university, the move to remove Prof. Aisha is allegedly being influenced by political and personal interests rather than her performance.
A senior staff member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the attempt as “a setback to the progress made by the university in recent years.
Under Prof. Aisha’s leadership, we have witnessed remarkable progress in research, accreditation of new courses, and overall staff motivation.
Removing her at this stage would be detrimental to the university’s stability,” the source stated. The petition also warns of potential unrest within the university community should the governing council proceed with the removal.
It further calls on the Minister of Education and other relevant authorities to intervene and ensure due process is followed in handling the matter.Meanwhile, students of the university have also expressed their concerns, with some staging a peaceful demonstration in support of the Vice-Chancellor. Many students praised her for improving learning facilities and fostering a more inclusive academic environment.
Attempts to reach the university’s governing council for a comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report. However, an official close to the council stated that discussions regarding the Vice-Chancellor’s tenure were still ongoing.
As the situation unfolds, stakeholders in the education sector are closely monitoring developments at UniAbuja, hoping for a resolution that prioritizes the institution’s growth and stability.
