The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), in partnership with Christoffel-Blinden Mission (CBM) and Health and Development Support Programme (HANDS), has begun free hydrocele surgeries for 50 residents.
The exercise, flagged off on August 22, 2025, at Kubwa General Hospital, targets men affected by hydrocele, a complication of lymphatic filariasis that causes painful scrotal swelling, stigma, and loss of livelihood.
Director of Public Health, Dr. Dan Gadzama, said the intervention will help patients regain dignity and productivity. CBM, IHS Towers, and HANDs were commended for supporting drug distribution, case finding, and subsidised surgeries across FCT communities.
Beneficiaries, including a three-year-old boy and a 49-year-old man, expressed gratitude, while officials confirmed that another 80 patients will benefit in the next phase. Experts insist surgery is the only cure for hydrocele, making the initiative crucial in reducing the NTD burden in Abuja.
