The National Forestry Security Service (NFSS) has deployed 6,836 personnel to reinforce forest protection efforts in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Commander General of the NFSS, Dr. Joshua Osatimehin, revealed this during the conclusion of a nationwide, five-day capacity-building program held across all six geopolitical zones.
He explained that the exercise, the second in the year, focused on strengthening intelligence gathering, agency cooperation, and tackling forest-related crimes.
Over 24,000 recruits have been trained across the country, having first undergone screening by the Police, DSS, and traditional leaders, followed by security-led refresher sessions.
Training figures include:
- FCT – 6,836
- Gombe – 6,856
- Plateau – 4,122
- South East – over 9,000
Osatimehin also urged President Bola Tinubu to sign the NFSS Establishment Bill, saying legal backing would strengthen the agency’s operations.
Deputy Commander-General (Intelligence), Dr. John Metchie, encouraged public support for the NFSS, assuring Nigerians of improved forest security going forward.
