Abuja, Nigeria – April 8, 2025
Nigeria has officially declared its interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games, selecting the nation’s capital, Abuja, as the proposed host city.
The announcement was made by officials from the Federal Ministry of Sports Development, who revealed that a formal bid has been submitted to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). If successful, this would mark the first time Nigeria—and indeed any West African country—will host the prestigious international multi-sport event.
According to the Minister of Sports, the bid is backed by strong government support and aims to showcase not only Nigeria’s sporting talent but also its growing capacity to organize large-scale international events.
“Abuja is ready,” the Minister declared. “We are confident in our facilities, infrastructure, and most importantly, the passion of our people. Hosting the Commonwealth Games will not only boost tourism and investment but also unite the country through sports.”
The proposal includes upgrades to existing sports infrastructure such as the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, and plans for additional athlete villages, transport improvements, and security enhancements.
Sporting analysts see Abuja’s bid as a strong contender, citing the city’s experience hosting major events like the All Africa Games and the World Economic Forum Africa.
If approved, the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Abuja would be a landmark moment for Nigeria and a significant milestone for the Commonwealth sports movement.
