The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has raised serious concerns over rampant land grabbing and the widespread underdevelopment of allocated lands in Abuja.

During an inspection tour of ongoing infrastructure projects on Friday, Wike criticized both institutions and individuals for hoarding large parcels of land without putting them to productive use. The tour comes ahead of events marking the second anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

‘University of Abuja Holding Over 1,000 Hectares Unused’

Wike singled out the University of Abuja for acquiring over 1,000 hectares of land for its permanent site, most of which remains undeveloped.

“It’s unacceptable,” Wike said. “What makes a university is not the vast land size but the infrastructure and quality of education.”

He warned that acquiring land under the guise of “future development” has often turned into a strategy for land speculation and hoarding, which undermines growth in the FCT.

Threatens Repossession of Idle Lands

Wike also revealed that the Nigeria Police Force had been allocated land but failed to develop it, echoing the same pattern of neglect.

“If they give you land and you don’t develop it, the government will take it back and reallocate it to those ready to build,” he declared.

Although the FCT Administration is not taking immediate action, the minister confirmed plans to consult with the Director of Lands and invite the concerned institutions for a meeting to explain their inaction.

New Roads Expected to Spur Development

The minister expressed optimism that the ongoing construction of strategic roads — particularly the one leading to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Academy — will attract development in surrounding areas.

“We believe the road will encourage landowners to develop their properties,” he added.

Projects Set for Commissioning in May

Wike also announced that key infrastructure projects, including the 15-kilometre Apo–Wassa service lane on the Outer Southern Expressway, are on track for completion and commissioning in May.

“We are satisfied with the quality of work and confident Mr. President will be pleased during the inauguration,” he said.

The minister commended the contractors for their diligence and reiterated the FCTA’s commitment to making Abuja a model capital city through sustainable urban development.
