Abuja, Nigeria – March 28, 2025 –
A violent confrontation broke out at Banex Plaza, Abuja, as members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), also known as Zakzaky supporters, clashed with security forces. The Nigerian Army has reportedly taken control of the area amid escalating tensions and multiple gunshots.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as IMN protesters, demanding the release of their leader Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, encountered heavily armed military personnel. “We were peacefully protesting when suddenly soldiers arrived and started shooting in the air. People began running in different directions,” said a protester who asked to remain anonymous.
Reports indicate that tear gas and live rounds were fired to disperse the crowd, though the extent of casualties remains unclear. Shops and businesses within Banex Plaza were forced to shut down as traders and customers fled for safety. “The entire area is on lockdown. Soldiers have blocked the roads, and people are afraid to step out,” said a local business owner.
This is not the first time IMN members have protested in Abuja, with past demonstrations often resulting in confrontations with security forces.
The group has long demanded the unconditional release of their leader, who was previously detained for years by the Nigerian government.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement regarding the current situation, but human rights organizations are already raising concerns about the excessive use of force against protesters.
Residents and commuters are advised to avoid the Banex Plaza area until tensions de-escalate.
