MonITNG, a civic technology platform, has called on FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to prioritize school renovations across Abuja, highlighting the alarming conditions at LEA Primary School Yimi in Gwagwalada.
Established in 1996 as the community’s only primary school, the facility serves 386 pupils who study in hazardous conditions. The school lacks windows, proper flooring, and functional desks. Students sit on broken furniture or the bare floor, exposed to dust and harsh weather. During rainy seasons, water leaks through the damaged roof, while extreme heat fills airless classrooms during dry periods.
The civic group expressed disappointment that despite Wike’s recent approval of N2.18 billion in contracts, FCT pupils continue learning in “inhumane conditions” without toilets, clean water, or safe learning spaces.
Responding to these concerns, FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) Chairman Dr. Alhassan Sule stated that the board has begun distributing facilities to schools across the six area councils, with more interventions planned. He noted that most struggling schools were established by Area Councils before being transferred to UBEB for monitoring.
“We constituted a committee to address these issues,” Sule said. “Many schools have seen population increases due to economic hardship forcing students to transfer from private institutions. We maintain an open-door policy to education—the most important thing is for children to be in school.”
The chairman assured that many affected schools are already included in UBEB’s action plan, with additional interventions forthcoming.
