The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has approved N1.94 billion for five earth-moving machines to enhance urban management in Abuja.
Chief Felix Obuah, Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), announced this after an FCT Executive Committee meeting led by Minister Nyesom Wike.
The machines will improve the Department of Development Control’s ability to regulate urban development in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The contract was awarded to Matrak Nigerian Ltd, with delivery expected in three weeks.
Equipment to be procured:
- SEM CAT Wheel Loader (SEM656)
- CAT Wheel Loader (950 GC)
- CAT Excavator (320 GX)
- CAT Excavator (323 GX)
- CAT Dozer (D6 GC)
Obuah clarified that the machines are not meant solely for demolitions but will aid broader development control operations.
Why it matters:
Abuja has long struggled with unregulated development that deviates from its master plan. The Department of Development Control enforces urban planning laws, ensuring compliance with building codes, land use policies, and public infrastructure regulations.
Despite rapid expansion, illegal structures and informal settlements remain a challenge. To address this, the FCTA is equipping the department with machines for site clearance, land reclamation, and urban management.
The administration has recently intensified crackdowns on unauthorized buildings, especially those on government land. In December 2024, Minister Nyesom Wike reaffirmed his commitment to this effort, stating he would not be deterred by blackmail.
This initiative supports the FCTA’s broader goal of preventing slum growth and ensuring Abuja remains a well-planned and organized city.
