The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has commenced sanitation of all motor parks across the Territory.

This is in order to rid the nation’s capital of proliferation of illegal motor parks, resolve one-chance security challenge and tackle environmental degradation, among others.

Director, department of Development Control, Mukhtar Galadima, made this known today during sensitization of managers of the motor parks ahead of full enforcement slated for tomorrow (Wednesday).

According to the Director, the action was also part of arrangements to clean up the parks and get rid of illegal ones in line with the vision of the Nyesom Wike led FCT Administration.

Recall that, during the early days of his assumption as FCT Minister, Wike decried that every available space in Abuja was being turned into a motor park, thereby promoting insecurity and reducing standards of Abuja.

Galadima said: “We’re trying to see that we sensitize the operators of this illegal motor parks and tell them that we’re giving them deadlines to comply with our directives.

“The exercise is going to be on, so long as they are operating illegally. This is all we want to make sure the operators of these motorparks understand and comply with. The provisions of the Abuja Master  Plan, as well as development guidelines must be respected to ensure that the city is more aesthetically pleasing and functional,” he stressed.

The Director stated that after sanitizing the parks and their surroundings, relevant agencies of government would be handed the parks to prevent further abuses.

He suggested that the cleaned up parks would be given to Transportion Secretariat for allocation to competent managers.

Galadima added that the exercise was part of efforts to sanitize the Federal Capital City.

Secretary, Command and Control Unit, department of Security Services, FCTA, Dr. Peter Olumuji, on his part, noted that if motor parks were not used for intended purposes, they would turn into areas harbouring criminals, who would cause insecurity in the Territory.

He harped on the need to identify all those who work in the parks to be able to fish out bad elements amongst them and secure not just the parks but the entire Territory.

Deputy Director, Monitoring and Enforcement, Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), Kaka Bello, disclosed that there were a lot of complaints about the operations of motor parks in the FCT.

He berated the situation on misuse of parks provided by the government; vowing that the FCTA would recover and sanitize all the parks and put then to their rightful use.

Chairman, FCT NURTW, Comrade Yusuf Alabi, who pledged the support of his Union blamed the poor condition of the

parks  on the fact that they were handed to wrong persons for management.

He, therefore, appealed to the FCTA to give the motor parks to the right persons, who know how to handle parks.
