General hospital gwarinpa gets trauma center

Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has provided and commissioned a modern Trauma Centre at the Gwarinpa General Hospital to address such cases that has been on the rise in the Territory.

The Centre was commissioned by the Director-General, FCT Hospital Management Board (HMB), Dr. Mohammed Kawu, Wednesday.

The Director-General noted the increasing number of trauma cases in its Hospitals and the Administration has provided as a way of increasing the access to specialist trauma care.

The Centre according to him was transformed from a ‘’plaster house’’ to a trauma centre by Health and Human Services Secretariat under the leadership of the immediate past Mandate Secretary, Dr. Abubakar Tafida.

Dr. Kawu said that the centre would accommodate trauma patients with varying injuries that may be life threatening and require multi-disciplinary comprehensive and emergency medical attention.

Speaking further, the Director-General said having such a Centre is a proactive measure to save lives as well as improve the quality of healthcare services in line with global best practices.

He, therefore, urged other Medical Directors in FCT Hospitals to emulate such proactive measures through viable projects that will improve healthcare services in the Territory.

Dr. kawu used the occasion to call on the orthopedic department of the Gwarinpa General Hospital to utilize the facility and render good services that will cushion the effect of trauma on patients and by extension save lives.

In her remarks, the Medical Director, Gwarinpa General Hospital, Dr. Halima Bello, said that trauma happens when a person experiences a distressing event such as accident, violence, combat or natural disaster that may result in an emotional response or physical injury.

Dr. Bello said that physical trauma can be life threatening and requires immediate medical attention, because of varying injuries that might result in airway obstruction, cardiac arrest, intracranial bleeding and others.

She appreciated the FCT Administration, Management of Health and Human Services Secretariat and Hospital Management Board for the support towards transforming Gwarinpa General Hospital with other completed projects such as equipping the Out Patient Department and Private Wing of the hospital, which are now fully operational.

Also speaking at the commissioning, the Director, Medical and Diagnostics (HMB) Dr. Olugbenga Bello, who was represented by Dr. Osagie Osayande, appreciated the timely support often given to the health facilities by the FCT Administration and for creating an enabling environment for the hospitals to provide quality healthcare services to the FCT residents.
