The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has agreed to hold a meeting with retired police officers who staged a peaceful protest in Abuja, demanding their removal from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
Despite a downpour, the aging retirees marched through the streets to the National Assembly and Force Headquarters, chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards to press home their demand for a return to the old pension arrangement.
Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, Ajao Adewale, addressed the protesters, assuring them that the IGP had invited them to a meeting at the Peacekeeping Hall of the Force Headquarters to listen to their grievances.
In response to concerns over the protest, the Nigeria Police Force cautioned against attempts by external actors to politicize the demonstration or stir unrest. The IGP, however, emphasized his openness to constructive dialogue and reiterated the need to treat retired officers with respect and fairness.
The police further urged all genuine retirees to remain calm and support peaceful efforts toward resolving the pension issue.
