Coach Rena Wakama Joins D’Tigress Camp in Abuja Ahead of FIBA Women’s Afrobasket
Head Coach of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, Rena Wakama, has joined the team’s training camp in Abuja as preparations continue for the upcoming FIBA Africa Women’s Afrobasket Championship in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
Wakama made history in 2023 when she became the first female to head the team and led them to their fourth consecutive FIBA AfroBasket Women title, marking a first by a Nigerian woman since the tournament’s inception.
In 2024, she guided D’Tigress to a landmark quarterfinal appearance at the Paris Olympics, making them the first African basketball team, male or female, to reach that stage. Her achievement earned her FIBA’s Best Coach award at the global event.
