The Coalition of the FCT Nine Indigenous Peoples (COFIP) has called for the establishment of a Federal Capital Territory Indigenous Peoples Development Commission (FCT-IPDC) to address displacement, safeguard cultural heritage, and boost inclusion.
Speaking during the North Central constitutional review hearing in Lafia, Nasarawa State, COFIP leader Engr. Shittu S. Chidawa urged constitutional amendments to recognize FCT natives, ensure fair compensation, and provide political representation.
The group also demanded an elected FCT governor, a State Assembly, and reinstatement of local governments to deepen democracy. They called for employment quotas, scholarships, and land restitution, citing global charters on indigenous rights.
“Our identity is fading; urgent steps are needed to protect our future,” Chidawa said.
