The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has confiscated more than 280 vehicles, motorcycles, and tricycles linked to criminal activities across Abuja as part of the ongoing “Operation Sweep Abuja.”

The crackdown, which has been running for four days, was confirmed by the Director of the Department of Security Services, Adamu Gwary, on Monday, July 14, 2025. Represented by Dr. Peter Olumuji, Gwary said the operation is a key initiative introduced by FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, to rid the capital city of criminal elements.

He stated that the total number of impounded items includes over 200 commercial motorcycles, around 40 tricycles (popularly known as Keke Napep), and numerous vehicles involved in criminal or traffic-related offenses.

“In addition to those aiding criminal activities, we have impounded more than 40 vehicles for traffic violations and lack of proper documentation or registration,” he explained.

Gwary emphasized that the operation has been well received by Abuja residents, who have long called for stronger action against rising crime. “This exercise is yielding results, and people are beginning to feel safer. However, the influx of new residents has increased pressure on infrastructure and created challenges for law enforcement,” he said.

He added that several commercial operators were arrested for operating illegally, including those without appropriate color codes or permits, and all offenders will be prosecuted accordingly.

“Operation Sweep Abuja is a multi-agency approach involving police, VIO, and other security outfits. It is designed to restore order and maintain Abuja’s reputation as one of the safest places to live in Nigeria,” Gwary stated.

He assured the public that the FCTA remains committed to ensuring a secure and orderly environment for all residents.
