The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) is considering an extension of the ongoing third term academic session for public primary schools across the territory.

This development follows the prolonged teachers’ strike earlier in the year, which significantly disrupted the academic calendar and left many pupils behind in their studies.

A senior official within the FCTA Education Secretariat confirmed on Tuesday that consultations are ongoing to determine the best approach to make up for lost instructional time. The extension, if approved, would allow schools to complete essential academic activities before the start of the next session.

“The idea is to ensure that pupils do not miss out on core learning objectives due to the strike. We are still reviewing the situation and will make a formal announcement soon,” the official said.

Teachers in FCT public primary schools resumed in May after a months-long industrial action over unpaid salaries and entitlements. While learning has resumed, stakeholders have raised concerns about the limited time left in the term.

Parents and education advocates are urging the FCTA to provide clear guidance and support to ensure the academic gap is properly addressed.
