A land ownership dispute has erupted between the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) over two plots of land in Abuja, sparking public attention and institutional tensions.

The controversy centers on plots MISC 54707 and 54824, located in the Federal Capital Territory. In a public notice dated July 10, the NSITF claimed to have lost key documents related to the land including the Certificate of Occupancy, Power of Attorney, and Deed of Assignment and warned land authorities and the public against transacting with any individual or group using those documents.

In a swift and strongly-worded response, the NLC, led by its President Joe Ajaero, described the NSITF’s claim as “mischievous” and “utterly ridiculous.” The union insisted it is the rightful owner of the land and accused NSITF of attempting to mislead the public and government agencies.

The NLC further urged authorities, including the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Abuja Geographic Information Systems (AGIS), to disregard the NSITF’s claims and demanded that the agency retract its notice.

Despite the backlash, the NSITF has stood by its position, insisting it retains ownership of the land and calling for the matter to be resolved through proper legal and administrative channels.

The dispute has raised concerns over land administration and record-keeping in the FCT, with stakeholders calling for transparency and legal clarity to prevent similar controversies in the future.
