20 States Face Flood Risk in July Despite ₦620bn Intervention Fund
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh flood alert, warning that 20 states are at high risk of severe flooding this July, despite over ₦620 billion already disbursed from the Ecological Fund to tackle such emergencies.
States listed include Lagos, Benue, Edo, Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara, Bayelsa, Cross River, Ogun, Ondo, Niger, Nasarawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Delta, Jigawa, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers.
NiMet said recent heavy rainfall and poor drainage infrastructure could lead to flash floods, urging residents to stay alert and take preventive measures such as clearing blocked drains, switching off electricity during heavy rains, and avoiding flood-prone areas.
The warning has raised concerns among citizens and environmental experts, who question how the Ecological Fund created to address such disasters is being utilized. Many accuse state and local governments of mismanaging resources meant to protect lives and property.
Climate experts are also calling for better coordination between federal and state agencies, as well as stronger enforcement of urban planning regulations to reduce the impact of flooding.
As the rainy season deepens, communities in high-risk areas are being urged to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines.
