At least six suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing of a man accused of stealing yams at Gosa Market along Airport Road in Abuja.

The incident, which triggered panic among traders and residents, forced many to abandon the market known as one of the most affordable spots for food shopping in the city.

Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Adewale Ajao, said officers moved swiftly to calm tensions and restore peace to the area.

“A young man was accused of stealing some tubers of yam at the market. Sadly, someone decided to take the law into his own hands. That’s a human being we’re talking about and that’s what led to the crisis,” Ajao said.

He confirmed that six individuals are now in custody, and the case is being treated as murder.

Police say investigations are ongoing as they work to bring all those involved to justice.
