Food prices in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have risen sharply, causing hardship for both sellers and buyers. Many families say feeding has become a struggle as basic items are now too expensive.

A recent market survey shows that prices of staples like tomatoes, onions, pepper, and yams have more than doubled in some areas. At Orange Market, a basket of tomatoes now sells for ₦65,000–₦75,000, up from ₦25,000–₦35,000 in May. A big bag of onions has also increased to ₦45,000–₦50,000 from ₦15,000–₦25,000.

Traders in Wuse, Utako, and Gwagwalada report reduced sales as customers buy less or request credit. Some sellers say they now sell at very low profits to attract buyers, while consumers complain they can no longer afford nutritious meals.

However, there’s a slight drop in rice prices, now going for ₦70,000–₦77,000 per bag, down from ₦80,000–₦87,000.

Both traders and shoppers are appealing to the federal government to reduce transport costs and intervene to stabilize food prices across markets.
