Police Order Immediate Release of Suspects Held for Minor, Bailable Offences in Abuja

The Nigeria Police Force has directed that all suspects being held for minor and bailable offences in Abuja should be released immediately.

This order came from the Force Headquarters in Abuja and is aimed at stopping the unlawful detention of people who should have been granted bail.

The police warned that any officer who disobeys the directive will face serious punishment. The order also stated that any injury or death that happens while someone is being held in custody will be investigated, and those responsible will be held accountable.

Officers in charge of police stations and commands in Abuja have been told to ensure full compliance with this order.

This move is part of ongoing efforts to reform police operations and protect the rights of citizens. It also follows the Inspector-General of Police’s recent decision to stop parading suspects publicly before trial.

Many human rights groups and legal experts have welcomed the new order. They say it will help reduce overcrowding in police cells and prevent mistreatment of suspects.

Police stations across the Federal Capital Territory are now expected to begin releasing those who fall under this category.
