Abuja, Nigeria – June 2025
Over 100 taekwondo coaches from across Nigeria are expected to gather in Abuja for a comprehensive technical training seminar designed to sharpen coaching skills and raise the standard of the sport nationwide.
The two-day training course, titled “Training the Taekwondo Trainers”, is being organized by the Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria (KCCN) in collaboration with the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation and the Taekwondo Supporters Club of Nigeria (TSCON). It is scheduled to hold at the Korean Cultural Centre located in the Central Business District of Abuja.
The seminar targets black-belt degree holders who are actively involved in coaching within clubs, schools, or private institutions. It aims to equip them with modern coaching techniques, curriculum development strategies, injury management skills, and a better understanding of both poomsae (forms) and kyourugi (sparring) training methods.
According to the organizers, the program will feature practical demonstrations and theoretical sessions facilitated by experienced grandmasters and technical directors. Notable instructors include Grandmaster George Ashiru, GM Abdullahi Saidu, Master Ogunmuyiwa Gbolahan, GM Dominic Bassey, and Coach John Victor.
A sample of the training schedule shows sessions covering areas such as taekwondo theory, fitness and endurance planning, administration and HR management for martial arts schools, poomsae rehearsals, unarmed self-defense, sparring strategies, and first aid techniques.
Speaking ahead of the event, officials from the Korean Cultural Centre emphasized the need for standardization and consistency in taekwondo coaching nationwide. “Our goal is to empower coaches with the right tools to develop athletes who can compete at national and international levels,” a spokesperson said.
Participants will be issued certificates of completion at the end of the course. The event is fully sponsored by KCCN, with no registration fees required.
Meanwhile, the Taekwondo Supporters Club of Nigeria continues to promote grassroots development of the sport through regular weekend training sessions and community engagement. The Abuja chapter currently trains every Saturday at the NAF Valley Sports Centre in Asokoro.
This initiative is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s taekwondo ecosystem and enhance the professional capacity of local coaches ahead of upcoming national tournaments and international competitions.
