Abuja – June 2025

The Catholic Lawyers Association of Nigeria (CLAN) has intensified its campaign for criminal justice reform and inmate welfare, calling for greater fairness and compassion within the nation’s judicial system.

During a recent outreach event held at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja, the association offered legal aid, donated essential supplies, and listened to the personal stories of awaiting-trial inmates many of whom have languished behind bars for years without proper legal representation.

President of CLAN, Barr. Emmanuel Nwachukwu, said the group is committed to defending the rights of the marginalized, especially those who have been forgotten by the justice system.

“Our mission is rooted in the Catholic principle of upholding human dignity. Many inmates are victims of delayed justice and systemic neglect. We are here to stand with them,” he stated.

CLAN members also used the occasion to advocate for decongesting correctional facilities, accelerating court processes, and improving prison conditions. They emphasized that justice should be rehabilitative, not merely punitive.

Inmates expressed gratitude for the rare show of support. One detainee, who has spent five years in prison without trial, said the visit renewed his hope for freedom.

The association has pledged to continue pro bono legal support and collaborate with other stakeholders in the justice sector to ensure reforms are not just discussed but implemented.
