Victims accused of phone theft; police launch investigation into rising mob violence in Abuja suburb
Three young men, suspected to be scavengers, were lynched by an angry mob in the Mpape area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following allegations of phone theft.
The tragic event occurred after the suspects were accused of snatching a mobile phone. Eyewitnesses say the situation quickly escalated when the community mobilized and attacked the suspects without waiting for law enforcement intervention.
A disturbing video of the incident has gone viral, sparking outrage among human rights advocates and residents, who condemned the act of jungle justice.
FCT Police Commissioner, AIG Adepoyibi Ajao, has ordered a full investigation into the incident, assuring the public that those behind the killings will be brought to justice.
“The command does not condone any form of lawlessness. We urge the public to always report crimes to the police instead of taking laws into their hands,” the police said in a statement.
The incident has further raised concerns about rising insecurity and mob justice in Abuja’s satellite communities like Mpape.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and report suspicious activities to the police through official channels.
