The Federal Capital Territory Administration has pulled down an unauthorized concrete water channel built in a designated green area in Utako, Abuja, in a renewed crackdown on environmental violations and illegal development.

The demolition, which took place behind the former Tauba Hotel on Plot 1001, Ibrahim Tahir Lane, was supervised by Chief Felix Obuah, Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, alongside top officials of relevant FCTA agencies.

The illegal duct, laid across a natural waterway, was reportedly intended to support construction on the sitean action Obuah described as a blatant violation of the Abuja Master Plan, which designates the location as Park 293.

“Two weeks ago, I said every illegal structure in Abuja would be brought down. Today, we have moved in with personnel and machinery to keep that promise,” Obuah declared. “This green area will be reclaimed and restored to prevent future flooding and ensure public safety.”

He confirmed that the developer behind the illegal work is currently on the run but assured that security agencies are tracking him for prosecution.

The Department of Parks and Recreation is expected to begin immediate rehabilitation of the site.

Its Director, Mr Chidemelu Echee, condemned the destruction of trees and blockage of the waterway, warning that tampering with natural drainage is an open invitation to disaster.

Obuah emphasized that the demolition is part of a wider operation across the city targeting all structures erected without approval.

“This is about safeguarding lives and property. Any structure standing in the way of proper water flow will be removed,” he said.
