The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) has commenced the demolition of illegal structures built on floodplains and water channels in a move to reclaim encroached waterways and avert disaster in the FCT.
During a site visit to Utako and Guzape, AMMC Coordinator Felix Obuah led a joint team of agencies to identify developers building across river channels and without approvals. He condemned the unauthorized construction of culverts and pavements over waterways, particularly in Utako, vowing to prosecute those responsible.
In Guzape, Obuah ordered the demolition of illegal structures in City Scape Estate Villa, where developers exceeded their approved 18 structures by constructing 42—many on floodplains. “It’s no longer business as usual,” he said, warning both developers and negligent district officers of severe consequences.
Obuah stressed that under FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s leadership, the administration would no longer tolerate violations of planning laws. AEPB Director Osilama Braimah also decried the alteration of the area’s natural features.
The FCTA has mobilized demolition equipment, signaling a strict enforcement phase aimed at restoring Abuja’s environmental integrity.
