Tragedy struck the Unguwar Shadadi community in Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) early Tuesday morning, as residents woke to the heartbreaking discovery of a newborn baby abandoned on a refuse heap.

The infant, believed to have been left there by an unidentified woman, was spotted around 5:00 a.m. by members of the local vigilante group during the final rounds of their night patrol.

Speaking on the discovery, vigilante member Danjuma Alkali described the moment they heard the faint cry of the baby, which led them to the dumpsite.

“We rushed to the spot and found the baby lying helplessly. It was a heartbreaking scene,” Alkali said.

With the Kuje Area Council’s Social Welfare Department still on strike, community elders advised that the newborn be taken to a nearby motherless babies’ home for immediate care.

This marks the second such disturbing case in the area in less than a month. Just two weeks earlier, another newborn was found abandoned inside an uncompleted building in Kuchiako, also within Kuje.

Local police have confirmed Tuesday’s incident, assuring the public that a full investigation is underway to trace and apprehend the individual responsible for the act.

Meanwhile, concerned residents and community leaders have called for stronger social welfare interventions and increased public awareness to prevent future occurrences.
