The Federal Government will begin a nationwide flood awareness campaign in May 2025 to help Nigerians prepare for possible floods.
Mr. Kunle Awojemila, Deputy Director at the Ministry of Environment, announced the plan on Sunday. He said the campaign will start in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), focusing first on flood-prone areas like Dutse, Lokogoma, and Lugbe. After that, the campaign will move to other states.
The government decided to take action after identifying 1,249 communities in 176 local government areas across 30 states and the FCT as high-risk flood zones between April and November.
Earlier, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utsev, warned that states like Lagos, Bayelsa, Kogi, Adamawa, and Rivers are likely to be the worst affected. He added that climate change is making floods more frequent and more dangerous.
The aim of the campaign is to teach people how to stay safe and reduce the damage from floods.
