Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, officially flagged off the 2025 African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship in a grand opening ceremony held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja. The prestigious tournament brings together 16 of the continent’s top women’s volleyball clubs in a celebration of sportsmanship, excellence, and the empowerment of African women through sports.
In her address, Senator Tinubu emphasized the importance of gender equality in sports and encouraged athletes to compete with integrity and pride.
“Gender is never a limitation to excellence. Today, you stand not only as athletes but as ambassadors of your countries and symbols of the potential of African womanhood,” she said.
The First Lady, who serves as the Grand Patron of the tournament, praised the initiative for promoting women’s participation in sports and fostering unity among African nations.
The tournament features notable teams such as Nigeria Customs Service and the Chief of Naval Staff Strikers, who are representing the host nation. In the opening match, Nigeria Customs faced Mayo of Cameroon in a high-energy showdown that set the tone for the competition.
The championship is set to run until April 14, 2025, with the top two teams earning a spot at the World Women’s Volleyball Club Championship later this year.
Organizers, including the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), expressed optimism that the event would leave a lasting legacy in the development of women’s volleyball on the continent.
The championship has drawn attention from local and international sports enthusiasts, with expectations high for an exciting and competitive tournament.
