In a bold move to popularize badminton and nurture young talent, the FCT Badminton Association has launched an ambitious grassroots development program dubbed “Grassroot Badminton.”

Spearheaded by its Chairman, Mohammed Usman Bappa, the initiative aims to bring the sport to every corner of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with a strong emphasis on inclusivity for all, including persons with disabilities.

Bappa outlined the association’s comprehensive strategy, which includes strategic partnerships, coaching clinics, and equipment support for aspiring players. He stressed the importance of identifying young talent early and creating a sustainable pathway for the growth of badminton in the FCT.

“Our collaboration with the FCT Sport Department is crucial to taking badminton to every nook and cranny of the FCT. Our goal is to catch the young ones early and develop their interest in the sport.

The coaching clinics are designed to introduce badminton to young people and equip them with the basic skills needed to excel,” Bappa explained.

To kickstart the initiative, the association’s Technical Crew has embarked on a sensitization tour of the six area councils in the FCT. During the tour, the crew is conducting two-day coaching clinics in each council to train and inspire young players.

Bappa revealed that the association plans to maintain a consistent presence in the councils, providing supervision and support to ensure the program’s sustainability. A six-week tournament—one week per council is also in the works to further engage and develop talent.

According to Bappa, the program is designed to be inclusive, ensuring that persons with disabilities are not left out. “The essence of grassroots badminton is to carry everyone along able and disabled. We are committed to engaging with players at all levels,” Bappa stated.

In addition to local efforts, he said the association has begun reaching out to foreign embassies to forge partnerships that will support the development of badminton in the FCT.

To ensure continuous training, the association is providing players with essential equipment such as rackets, shuttles, and sports shoes.

“We are committed to supporting our players by providing them with the tools they need to succeed,” Bappa said.

The success of the initiative he said will be measured through the planned annual Minister’s Cup Badminton Tournament, which will serve as the association’s Key Performance Indicator. Bappa expressed optimism about the program’s potential to transform badminton in the FCT.

This is just the beginning. We are building a legacy that will last for generations. Our goal is to create a new generation of badminton players and fans who will take the sport to greater heights,” he said.

With its focus on grassroots development, inclusivity, and strategic partnerships, the FCT Badminton Association is poised to revolutionize the sport in the capital, creating opportunities for young people and fostering a love for badminton across the FCT Bappa assured.
