AEDC Assures FCT Residents of Full Power Restoration by February 23, 2025

Abuja, Nigeria – The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has assured residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and neighboring areas that full power supply will be restored by February 23, 2025.

According to AEDC, ongoing repairs on the underground transmission line that was vandalized near Millennium Park in Abuja are progressing steadily. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is reportedly working around the clock to complete the restoration process.

In a power supply update posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, AEDC urged affected residents to remain patient as repairs are finalized.

Ongoing Restoration Efforts

In its statement, AEDC acknowledged the continued power supply disruption affecting several areas, including Wuye, Utako, Jabi, Mabushi, Katampe Districts, Life Camp, Wuse Zones 1-7, Wuse 2, Maitama, parts of the Central Business District, and surrounding locations.

This is due to the vandalization of the 132kV Katampe Central Area underground transmission cable. The Transmission Company of Nigeria has assured us that restoration efforts are actively ongoing, with its engineers working day and night to replace and reconnect the damaged cable, AEDC stated.

The company added that TCN has committed to completing the restoration work and normalizing power supply to the Central Area Transmission Substation (AT5) by February 23, 2025. In the meantime, AEDC announced that load management measures would be implemented to optimize the available power supply.

Widespread Power Disruptions

Residents and businesses in AEDC’s franchise areas have experienced extensive power outages over the past two months, with at least 188 locations across the FCT affected.

An analysis of 26 public notices issued by AEDC between January 1 and February 11, 2025, highlighted various technical faults on feeders as key causes of disruptions. This is despite AEDC collecting a reported N229.39 billion in electricity revenue within the first 11 months of 2024.

Besides feeder faults, other factors contributing to the outages include maintenance work by TCN and the relocation of key transmission infrastructure, such as the 33KV DC Airport Feeder and the 132KV Kukwaba-Apo Transmission Line Towers.
