The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has arrested over 250 commercial drivers in Abuja for flouting its directive that restricts taxis to only one passenger in the front seat. The arrests were made within two days as part of a renewed nationwide campaign to tackle overloading and improve road safety compliance in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The new operation, which began on October 2, targets reckless driving, unsafe passenger loading, and other violations that endanger road users.

FCT Sector Commander, Corps Commander Felix Theman, explained that the enforcement drive is aimed at saving lives and ensuring drivers adhere strictly to safety standards. According to him, overloading affects vehicle control, prevents the use of seatbelts, and increases the likelihood of fatal road crashes.

“This operation is primarily to protect lives. Drivers who overload vehicles not only endanger their passengers but also other motorists,” Theman stated.

He further revealed that from Monday, October 6, the FRSC would intensify enforcement across Abuja, with mobile magistrate courts set to prosecute offenders immediately.

Official FRSC data shows that between January 2024 and July 2025, more than 620,000 traffic offenders were arrested across Nigeria — a strong indication of the agency’s renewed effort to ensure safer roads and reduce crashes nationwide.
