Hospitals in the Federal Capital Territory were still grounded on Tuesday as the strike by resident doctors entered its second day. Patients in need of medical care were left stranded while routine services remained suspended.
The Association of Resident Doctors, FCT Administration, declared the action after a seven-day warning strike failed to bring any solution. The doctors are asking for payment of salary arrears, release of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, correction of pay issues and recruitment of more staff to ease the workload.
Most hospitals in Abuja have shut down outpatient clinics and cancelled scheduled surgeries. Pregnant women, children and elderly patients have been turned away, with only emergencies receiving limited attention.
A spokesperson for the doctors said they had no choice but to down tools, insisting that members could not continue working without pay and basic welfare support.
The strike has left many residents worried as private hospitals remain the only option. Authorities are yet to make a clear response.
