Claims have emerged accusing some National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) agents in Abuja of taking illegal payments to modify birth dates on the National Identification Number (NIN) database.
Several applicants told the press that NIMC officials and their go-betweens are demanding up to N45,000 to falsify birth dates, primarily to help individuals meet age criteria for federal jobs, military enlistment, or other official requirements.
The fraudulent practice is reportedly widespread in certain NIMC-accredited centres across the Federal Capital Territory, especially in satellite towns where supervision is lax.
