The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service has teamed up with Yakubu Gowon University to enhance inmate rehabilitation through education and vocational training.
During a meeting with the university’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Matthew, FCT Controller of Corrections Christopher Jen emphasized that
“Equipping inmates with skills during their sentences is vital for their successful return to society.”
Prof. Matthew applauded the effort and directed the university’s Open and Distance Learning Centre to set up a study hub in FCT custodial facilities, building on programs by the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). He highlighted the importance of society accepting reformed inmates to aid their reintegration.
Officials believe the collaboration will reduce recidivism and provide inmates with tools for a better future.
