Authorities Target Illegal Vehicle Mods, Fake Plates in Anti-Crime Drive
More than 700 vehicles have been impounded across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as part of the ongoing “Clean Sweep Abuja Operation (Second Phase),” a multi-agency crackdown on illegal modifications, tinted windows, and fake license plates.
The operation, involving the State Security Department, DRTS, and other law enforcement agencies, aims to curb “one chance” robberies, where criminals disguise themselves as taxi drivers to attack commuters.
At checkpoints in Apo-Wassa and Karu, officials found numerous vehicles without valid registration, unlawful window tints, and forged identification plates. “Dark films often conceal criminal acts. This enforcement will restore safety on Abuja roads,” said Dr. Peter Olumuji, speaking for State Security Chief Adamu Gwary.
Traffic Operations head Mrs. Deborah Osho stressed zero tolerance for fake plates, unlicensed commercial vehicles, and other violations, noting such practices endanger road users while fueling crime.
Authorities urged residents to cooperate with enforcement teams, assuring that the exercise is designed to enhance safety across the capital.
