Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, has ordered the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD) to carry out an immediate large-scale waste evacuation along the Nyanya-Karshi route to improve sanitation and public health.
STDD Coordinator, Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, disclosed this during a major cleanup operation in Nyanya on Thursday, August 7, 2025. He explained that the intervention became necessary after existing waste management contracts in the area lapsed in April, leaving refuse to accumulate rapidly.
According to him, the STDD is bridging the gap while new waste disposal contracts are being finalised, ensuring continuous refuse clearance. The operation will extend through Jikwoyi, Kurudu, Orozo, and Karshi, with the target of removing all roadside garbage within 24 hours to restore environmental hygiene.
Zulkiflu appealed to FCT residents to cooperate with licensed waste collectors and make use of approved dump sites, warning that roadside refuse poses severe health and environmental risks. He emphasised that proper waste management is key to a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Abuja.
