The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) on Thursday conducted a full-scale plane crash simulation at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, ahead of an audit by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

The exercise, involving several emergency agencies, tested Nigeria’s readiness, inter-agency coordination, and crisis response as part of airport recertification requirements.

NAMA’s Director of Air Traffic Services, Mr. John Tayo, represented by Agoro Abayomi, said the drill demonstrated Nigeria’s commitment to global aviation safety standards.

“Our level of preparedness today ensures safer operations tomorrow,” he said.

Participants included the Armed Forces, FAAN, NCAA, NiMet, FRSC, Fire Services, medical teams, and other emergency responders.

Search and Rescue Coordinator Macel Onwuakpa emphasized the drill’s importance for ICAO recertification and said feedback from the exercise would be used to improve future responses.

The initiative reinforces Nigeria’s goal of maintaining international standards and prioritizing passenger safety.
