The University of Abuja has joined a major international research effort to tackle sickle cell disease in Africa, supported by a £5 million grant.
The funding backs a collaborative project led by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, with the University of Abuja’s National Centre of Excellence for Sickle Cell Disease Research playing a key role.
At a workshop in Abuja, the Centre’s Director, Prof. Obiageli Nnodu, highlighted the need to build stronger research capacity across institutions. The event, held in partnership with Liverpool, focused on safeguarding and institutional research development under the PACTS project.
Other partners include Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and Zambia’s University Teaching Hospital, all working together to push for real progress in the fight against sickle cell disease on the continent.
