The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has ordered the closure of the Gwagwalada Area Council secretariat, including all clinics and primary health centres, effective Thursday, July 24, 2025.
According to FCT NULGE Chairman, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Kabi, the shutdown was prompted by the council’s failure to fully pay workers their three-month minimum wage arrears, despite the release of funds by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Kabi said only a few workers received one or two months’ pay, instead of the full three months.
Frustrated staff confirmed the union’s claims, saying they’ve waited for weeks without payment. “The minister released the money, but most of us got nothing,” said Mr. Zubairu Alhassan, a council worker.
Health worker Ibrahim Saleh also noted he hadn’t received any payment, even though other councils had started paying their staff.
Efforts to get a response from the council chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Jibrin Giri, were unsuccessful.
