Kwali Area Council is on track. It will become the first Open Defecation Free (ODF) Area Council in the FCT by December 2025. This follows major strides in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programmes.

FCT RUWASSA, UNICEF, and the Royal Netherlands Embassy confirmed the progress during an appraisal tour. This event happened on September 29, 2025.

Acting Director of RUWASSA, Abigail Ekpenisi, said 122 communities in Kwali are now ODF-certified. Kwali Central Ward is already declared ODF. She called for sustained investment, inclusive designs, and community ownership to maintain the gains.

UNICEF’s Chief of WASH, Jane Bevan, expressed confidence Kwali would achieve 100 percent ODF by December. Dutch Ambassador Bengt van Loosdrecht praised the community’s commitment to sanitation. The Estu of Kwali, HRH Ayedoo Luka Nizassan, also praised the community.

The initiative has improved health, hygiene, and dignity, positioning Kwali as a model for other councils in the FCT.
