The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced the resumption of passenger operations on the Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor, starting Wednesday, October 1, 2025. These operations were temporarily suspended following the derailment on August 26.
NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Mr. Callistus Unyimadu, confirmed in a Lagos statement that comprehensive safety, technical, and operational inspections are complete. These inspections ensure passengers’ safety and reliable service.
Out of 583 passengers listed on the train’s manifest, 530 were successfully contacted, and 512 have received full refunds. All 22 passengers who sustained injuries have been treated and will receive free weekly rides until December 31, 2025.
Additionally, all 618 individuals on board during the derailment are entitled to one complimentary train ride. This includes staff. The offer is valid until the end of 2025.
The NRC thanked passengers for their patience during the service suspension. They reassured the public that strict measures are now in place. These measures aim to prevent future incidents linked to human error, overspeeding, and braking issues.
An updated timetable for the Abuja-Kaduna train service has also been released, ensuring travelers can plan their journeys safely and efficiently.
