NCDC Confirms Abuja Fever Cases Not Ebola, Provides Public Health Guidance

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed that two recent suspected cases of viral hemorrhagic fever in Abuja are not linked to Ebola Virus Disease or Marburg Virus.

In a public advisory on Friday, NCDC Director General, Dr Jide Idris, said. At the same time, tests for Ebola and Marburg returned negative, samples are still being analysed for other hemorrhagic fevers, including Lassa and dengue. The announcement comes amid growing concern following reports of suspected viral infections in the city.

Dr Idris also outlined how Ebola spreads and what symptoms to watch for. People can become infected through contact with infected animals, typically during the process of butchering, cooking, or consuming them. However, most cases result from human-to-human transmission, when blood or other body fluids, including stool, urine, or semen of an infected person, enter the body through broken skin or mucous membranes.

Early symptoms of Ebola include sudden fever, extreme weakness, muscle pain, headache, and sore throat. The NCDC urged residents to stay alert, maintain proper hygiene, and seek medical attention immediately if they experience any of these warning signs.

The agency emphasised that public awareness, prompt reporting, and adherence to safety measures remain critical in preventing the spread of viral hemorrhagic fevers.
