Wike Flags Off Abuja Road Project, Defends Focus on Development
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has announced the launch of construction for the Arterial Road N1, which will connect Wuye District to Ring Road II. He emphasised that this project will improve the quality of life for residents and create new economic opportunities in Abuja.
At the flag-off on Thursday, September 18, 2025, Wike dismissed criticism that he is ignoring the health sector. He explained that ₦25 billion has already been set aside in the 2025 budget to upgrade hospitals, pay doctors’ allowances and fast-track new recruitment.
“Protests are part of democracy, but nobody will blackmail me. This road is not for Wike or Tinubu. It is for the people of Abuja,” he said.
The Minister added that new streetlights along the project corridor will be fitted with devices to alert security agencies if tampered with. Contractors will also be responsible for maintaining the lights to save costs.
He charged Arab Contractors to finish the Airport–Kuje Road on time and hinted at the upcoming commissioning of the FCT Court of Appeal Division.
Acting FCT Head of Service, Nancy Nathan, praised the project, while FCDA Executive Secretary, Engr. Richard Dauda, said the six-lane road will ease traffic in Wuye, Jabi, Utako and Dakibyu and create jobs for local residents.
The project is expected to ease congestion, improve connectivity and support the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
