Residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are calling for immediate flood-control measures as recurring floods wreak havoc in Lugbe, Nyanya, Gwagwalada, Asokoro, and Kuje, despite warnings from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

In Trademoore Estate, Lugbe, resident Gloria Ashedu described the floods as a “recurring nightmare,” slamming authorities for insufficient action. Residents are demanding retention ponds, evacuation centers, regular drainage clearance, and stricter enforcement of building laws. In Nyanya, Helen Ani suggested fines for illegal waste dumping and improved emergency communication systems.

The government’s ₦15 billion Anticipatory Action Framework has shown little impact, with no visible retention basins or shelters in high-risk areas. However, Lugbe’s community-led Flood Watch WhatsApp group and drainage expansion by the Abuja Environmental Protection Board have reduced flood incidents by 40% since mid-2024.

With heavier rainfall predicted, residents urge swift action, consistent drainage maintenance, shelter provision, and training for local responders, to avert further damage.
