The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has pledged to resolve 80% of the accommodation challenges faced by judges in Abuja before the end of President Bola Tinubu’s first term in 2027. Speaking at the flag-off ceremony for the construction of a new Magistrate Court in Jabi, Abuja, Wike highlighted the dire welfare conditions of judicial officers, many of whom are still tenants in rented apartments, subject to landlords’ pressures.

Wike emphasized the importance of providing a conducive environment for judges to deliver swift and effective justice. He noted that the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) has been directed to prioritize the construction of public buildings, including judicial facilities like the Supreme Court and residential accommodations for judges of the Federal High Court, FCT High Court, and Court of Appeal.

In 2023, Wike instructed the FCDA to develop essential infrastructure, such as roads, in Katampe and Jabi districts, where these residential projects are planned. He stressed that no construction would commence without proper infrastructure to ensure accessibility and functionality. The minister’s commitment underscores ongoing efforts to enhance judicial welfare and strengthen the justice system in the FCT by 2027.
