Severe rainfall has ripped through Gawu Ward in Abaji Area Council, leaving destruction across villages such as Gasakpa I and II, Gimgbe, Gawu Town, Tungan-Usman, and Fuka-Jamigbe.
Villagers say it was the fiercest downpour in nearly 20 years, as mud homes crumbled under the storm’s force. While no deaths were recorded, dozens of families lost their houses and belongings.
Among the victims is Malam Saidu Garba, whose recently completed three-bedroom home collapsed, rendering his household homeless. In Jamigbe, farmer Shuaibu Aliyu was forced to relocate his family to relatives’ houses after his building collapsed.
He appealed for urgent assistance, stressing that most affected residents cannot afford to rebuild.
To address the crisis, Abaji Area Council has established an emergency committee, chaired by Vice Chairman Alhaji Isah Makkah, to record damages and mobilize relief. In the meantime, displaced persons are relying on neighbors for shelter as fears grow that more rainfall could deepen their hardship.
