President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday launched the Renewed Hope Agricultural Mechanization Programme in Abuja, unveiling 2,000 tractors and thousands of modern farm tools to drive Nigeria’s food security agenda.

The scheme, hailed as the boldest in decades, includes 9,000 implements, 10 harvesters, 12 mobile workshops, spare-part kits, GPS systems, and a youth-focused training programme.

Tinubu said the programme will open up over 550,000 hectares of farmland, produce two million metric tons of staple food annually, create 16,000 jobs, and support 550,000 farming households across the country.

Nigeria must feed itself and still have enough to export. Today in Abuja, we begin a new chapter where farming becomes modern, efficient, and attractive to our youth,” Tinubu declared.

The tractors and equipment were supplied by Belarus, which pledged to establish local assembly plants, training centres, and service hubs in Nigeria. Tinubu added that the deal was facilitated by his longtime associate, Alex Sigman, who linked both governments.

Experts believe the Abuja launch signals a turning point that could secure Nigeria’s food needs and boost its place in global agriculture.
