Truck drivers on Saturday blocked the Abuja-Lokoja Expressway to protest alleged police extortion at checkpoints. The protest, which began around 11:43 a.m., followed the seizure of a driver’s truck by a Divisional Police Officer (DPO), who reportedly demanded ₦50,000 for its release.
Union leaders accused officers of harassment and unsafe practices, including a recent crash at a checkpoint on the Abaji-Toto Road.
But FCT Police Commissioner, CP Ajao Saka Adewale, dismissed the claims, insisting the truck was seized over lack of valid documents.
The protest caused hours-long traffic gridlock, leaving commuters stranded on one of the country’s busiest highways.
