A heartbreaking incident occurred in the Al-Huda community of Jahi District, Abuja, on Monday, as a three-year-old boy died after falling into an open soakaway pit.
The child was reportedly playing near the uncovered pit when he slipped and fell in. The pit, according to residents, had been left open for several weeks despite repeated complaints to those responsible for the property.
The tragedy sparked outrage in the community, with residents blaming gross negligence for the avoidable death. In response to the incident, the FCT Police Command confirmed the arrest of a man believed to be the caretaker of the compound.
Police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, stated that an investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances that led to the child’s death and to hold those responsible accountable.
The boy’s remains have been recovered and deposited at a local morgue. Residents are now calling on authorities to enforce stricter safety standards to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
